LEE BAINS
Lee Bains is a songwriter and poet from Birmingham, Alabama, who, since 2012, has released four studio albums of what Rolling Stone once called “Southern gospel punk." Having received acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, NPR, Mojo, Uncut, and the Guardian, Lee's most recent studio effort Old-Time Folks (Don Giovanni Records, 2022) explored stories of People’s movements and resistance in the Deep South. He will release a live solo album, Free South 2025, on Don Giovanni in August 2026. He has collaborated in live performance and on recordings with artists including Lonnie Holley, Moor Mother, Pussy Riot, and Algiers, and has toured with Nana Grizol, Bad Moves, Alabama Shakes, and John Moreland. After first having his poems published by The New Yorker in 2021, Lee will see his debut poetry collection, Work Lunch, published by Hub City Press in October 2026. In addition to touring around the U.S. and Europe, Lee has lent his music to support striking coal miners, immigrants’ rights groups, abortion funds, and anti-racism organizations.
MAKESHIFT HAMMER
Makeshift Hammer makes gutter-folk music. Growling and crooning, muttering about lost love, brimstone, and the glorious view from the underside of a rusty world-order, Owen holds the rhythm on mandolin and foot percussion. To his left, Bobby stretches bass notes into lyrical vines that vibrate somewhere north of your liver and flower unexpectedly at night. This is the kind of roots music that grows through the cracks in a West Philly sidewalk and drinks its rainwater laced with motor oil.
Under their former name, Driftwood Soldier, the duo released an EP and two full-length albums, which they brought to both sides of the Atlantic. In 2026, they released a song called “Driftwood Soldier” announcing their new name Makeshift Hammer. They make music mostly as a two-piece. Occasionally as eight limbs of a many-headed collective. Always as fellow travelers through an imperfect world, telling each other stories throughout the long night.
